Amenorrhea: causes and treatment

Amenorrhea: causes and treatment

February 2, 2021

Pregnancy, breastfeeding, sport, stress, menopause... The causes of amenorrhoea are multiple.

There are two types of this pathology:

  • Primary amenorrhoea is mainly due to genetic abnormalities (certain chromosomal disorders) or hormonal imbalances. In this case, a woman’s lack of menstruation is explained by episodes of stress, excessive physical activity, or considerable weight loss.
  • Secondary amenorrhoea is linked to ovarian pathologies such as polycystic ovary syndrome or premature ovarian failure. This occurs in cases of anatomical abnormalities of the vagina, cervix (stenosis after surgery), and uterus (Asherman’s syndrome).

Amenorrhoea: what treatment?

Of the two types, secondary amenorrhea is much more common. Its treatment begins by determining the basic pathology that causes the absence of menstruation. Then an individual treatment is prescribed to correct it.

When should I consult a specialist?

  1. If you have never had a period and are over 16 years old.
  2. В If you have already had your period and it stopped three months ago or more.

To prevent amenorrhea, it is recommended that you pay attention to your lifestyle and adopt good eating habits.
