Covid-19: what are the risks during pregnancy?

March 4, 2021

Since the beginning of the epidemic, many subjects have been worrying researchers as well as future and young mothers: their health, the progress of the pregnancy or the transmission of the virus to the baby... What do the first studies on the subject say?

We now know that pregnant women are more vulnerable to the virus and may develop more severe forms of the disease during the third trimester. It is during this period that certain changes in the body and especially in the immune system of the pregnant woman make her more vulnerable. This is also the case for women who are obese, have diabetes and high blood pressure and are over 35 years of age.

What are the risks of transmission to the baby?

Cases of transmission of the virus from a pregnant woman to her child have been recorded in some countries, notably in China, France and the United States. However, it is difficult to determine whether newborns were infected during pregnancy.

Cases of transmission of the virus via the placenta are extremely rare, but scientists remind us that it is important to remain vigilant.

Symptoms of the virus: what to do?

If a pregnant woman shows symptoms of the coronavirus she should contact her doctor and be tested. She can go directly to the obstetrical emergency room of the institution where she is followed.

Positive test: what to do?

If the test is positive and the mother-to-be is a carrier of the virus, she must contact her gynecologist and the prenatal team that is following her.
