How to combine IVF and sport?

We often hear that sports can improve fertility. However, would sports have the same beneficial effect when you are in the middle of an assisted reproduction process? Here is what you need to know.

 

Intensive sports practice is likely to cause menstrual irregularities and disrupt your ART journey. Studies show that intense sports activity is responsible for the decrease in the conception rate in women.

The good news: sports practice is indeed compatible with IVF. However, if you participate in marathons or training dedicated to athletes, your doctor will advise you to considerably reduce the intensity of your activity during IVF.

The important thing is to know how to choose your physical activity, to adjust the intensity and duration of the sessions.

  1. Reduce your sports activity to 4 hours per week.
  2. According to studies, women who undergo IVF and practice more than four hours of sport per week are more likely to suffer an abortion involuntary cycle, miscarriage or embryo implantation failure.
  3. Avoid high-impact sports. Favor swimming, water aerobics, etc.
  4. Be prepared to interrupt your sports activity during the week of the egg retrieval.
  5. Think about your future baby and all the happiness you will feel after its birth. You can then resume your sports activity to get back in shape.
