Several French couples whose children were born from surrogate motherhood programs in Ukraine cannot pick up their newborn babies due to the closing of borders to foreigners as part of the fight against the coronavirus. The situation is becoming more and more painful and questionable, taking into account the fact that the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs refuses to provide aid to its nationals.
The parents actively pressured the media and hired lawyers to obtain a verbal note from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. In reality, everything seems much more complicated. Is there a break between France and Ukraine at the legislative level? – Yes, to a certain extent. There is a necessary condition obtaining authorization. If surrogate motherhood is not recognized in the country of residence of the intended parents, obtaining such a document is impossible, or requires a lot of time. It would be wonderful for France to follow the example of Israel, the United States, and the United Kingdom, which grant such a verbal note without any difficulty.
Children remain deprived of parental care because parents do not have the physical capacity to exercise their rights and obligations in the context of the COVID 19 pandemic also suffer those who have planned to travel to attend a childbirth.
Parents consolidate, share their experiences in specially designed social media groups, hoping to be heard. They support each other and consider all possible options to see their children as quickly as possible.
The French, representatives of Ukrainian reproductive medicine agencies and clinics, as well as all the stakeholders concerned, relentlessly forward petitions and letters to the various ministries, so that parents can reach their babies in Ukraine as quickly as possible.
We hope very much that the epidemic situation will develop favorably, and that movement bans will be lifted as soon as possible so that you can quickly get there and welcome your babies. Let’s not forget the wisdom of Winston Churchill: “Success is not final; failure is not fatal, it is the courage to continue that counts.”
