During pregnancy, the cervix, which connects the lower part of the womb to the vagina, remains closed and long to prevent the descent of the fetus. However, before the big day, it may undergo all sorts of changes. Here's what you need to know about changes to the cervix.
Sometimes it can shorten prematurely, which can trigger labor too early. In this case, the mother-to-be is forced to remain at rest. She is then hospitalized for regular monitoring by the medical team.

A short cervix is often asymptomatic and can be diagnosed during an ultrasound scan. However, the appearance of uterine contractions accompanied by brief but repetitive pains should alert you. In this case, you should contact your doctor.
What treatments are available to reduce the risks?
Fortunately, there are ways to prolong pregnancy and reduce the risk of premature labor. Your doctor can prescribe progesterone, a hormone that will help you prevent contractions and bring your pregnancy to term. Other options include the Arabin pessary and cervical cerclage.
