Male infertility: primary causes.

March 12, 2021

When a couple is unable to conceive a child, female infertility is often thought of as the root cause. However, 30% of infertility cases are related to men.

What are the main causes of male infertility?

Problems with sperm production in the testicles are among the most common causes of infertility. In particular, the following abnormalities can be distinguished:

  • Azoospermia is characterised by the absence of sperm in the ejaculate;
  • Oligospermia is defined by a sperm count of less than 30 million/ml;
  • Asthenospermia is diagnosed when sperm motility is reduced to more than 40%.
  • Teratospermia is characterized by the abnormal shape of most spermatozoa.

People at risk

Lifestyle has an important impact on fertility in both women and men. Factors that have a negative effect on sperm production include:

  1. Excessive alcohol consumption,
  2. smoking,
  3. cancer treatment,
  4. certain infections or diseases such as diabetes, pancreatic insufficiency or high blood pressure.

However, this is not an exhaustive list of causes of male infertility. Male infertility problems can occur at different levels: from sperm production in the hormonal system. Some cases remain unexplained.
