Male infertility: what treatments?

March 12, 2021

Some cases of male infertility can be treated using medical or surgical techniques. The treatment offered varies depending on the cause of the problem.

In some cases, antibiotics may be prescribed to treat infections. To restore testicular function, hormones may be prescribed. It is also recommended to improve sperm quality before starting the MAP treatment.

Surgical treatments

Thanks to testicular biopsy, it is possible to collect spermatozoa from the testicle in order to carry out in vitro fertilization. What procedures are used?

  • Percutaneous Epididymal Sperm Aspiration (PESA) involves inserting a fine needle into the epididymis to locate a sperm pocket and aspirate the sperm.
  • In the case of azoospermia (the absence of spermatozoa in the ejaculate), a Direct Epididymal Puncture (DEP) may be performed to obtain spermatozoa. It is a surgical procedure with little chance of complications, typically used when PESA fails.
  • Testicular sperm extraction (TESE) is performed when there is a shortage of sperm in the epididymis. An incision is performed to remove a piece of testicular tissue to obtain the semen.

The importance of vitamins

Nutritional supplements are highly recommended for parents-to-be entering a MAP treatment. Although the mobility and quantity of sperm do not play a major role in the success of ICSI, their morphology is very important. Any abnormality, as well as a slight deficiency of folic acid in parents, may affect the future baby’s DNA. Supplements like Proxeed and Conception are often recommended to normalize the couple’s health.
