Twin pregnancies after IVF: causes and consequences

Twin pregnancies after IVF: causes and consequences

May 27, 2021

Twin pregnancy is a real event that promises you twice as much happiness. However, both the pregnancy and the birth are not without risks and consequences

How does a twin pregnancy occur?

The cause of a twin pregnancy is directly related to the fertilisation of the eggs. One sperm will fertilise an egg that then divides into two cells, or can directly fertilise two eggs at the same time. In the first case, the two foetuses will share the same amniotic fluid and will be called “identical twins”.

What are the consequences?

Unfortunately, a twin pregnancy can be more difficult to cope with than a single pregnancy. During gestation, the mother’s nutritional needs are higher and so are the risks, such as high blood pressure and anaemia. This means nine months of great fatigue, accompanied by a longer maternity leave.  As for the delivery, which is much more demanding, it must be carefully monitored and is often carried out by caesarean section so as not to damage the mother’s body, which is already very tired from labour.

Finally, at birth, babies may be stunted or born prematurely.
