While there are very few risks and reasons for IVF to fail, sometimes a couple has to go through the process several times to achieve viable fertilisation. Here are the main reasons.
A problem with ovarian stimulation
Ovarian stimulation can be interrupted when it is realised that no follicles are being produced, when a cyst appears during the treatment or when the ovaries overproduce. In the latter case, the ovaries increase in size and the risk of oedema and torsion is increased. The patient may then be hospitalised with abdominal pain, various insufficiencies and respiratory problems.
The egg retrieval did not work
Sometimes no mature eggs can be retrieved at the time of the operation. It is therefore necessary to repeat the procedure at a later date.
The gametes or implantation factors were not reliable
If the egg or sperm used has an abnormality, fertilisation cannot take place. In other cases, implantation does not work properly and the embryo does not attach to the endometrium.
The foetus is also unreliable
If a foetus or the mother’s uterus has an abnormality, the pregnancy ends spontaneously in miscarriage. Here too, it is advisable to start again.
It is important to know that with the advent of innovative reproductive technologies the risk of your IVF failing is minimal.
