Understanding surrogate motherhood in Ukraine: Legislation and Ethics

Ukraine is one of the countries where surrogate motherhood (surrogacy) has been allowed by law since 2002. However, to benefit from this medical treatment, parents must meet several requirements.
Here in Ukraine, the program is available to married heterosexual couples provided that the intended mother is medically unable to conceive a child or carry out a pregnancy without endangering the health of the baby.
This program is regulated by a number of legal acts, including Article 281, paragraph 7 of the Civil Code of Ukraine and the Decree of the Ministry of Health ” On the approval of the procedure for the application of technologies of assisted reproduction in Ukraine. “
The ethical side of surrogate motherhood
What are the motivations of women who decide to become surrogate mothers? Be fully aware of her decision to carry a child for others; the surrogate mother often seeks to improve her family’s lifestyle or to finance her project (purchase of a property, return to school, etc.) Can she keep the baby?
