While the Russian authorities are studying the draft law banning surrogate motherhood for foreigners, the concern is spreading in Ukraine. Could surrogacy suffer the same fate here?
The Russian draft law envisages a ban on foreign couples having recourse to Surrogacy in Russia. This restriction is intended to combat child trafficking in Asia, but obviously applies to European couples seeking parenthood.
And in Ukraine?
Although the Ukrainian authorities have not yet gone that far, the issue of banning Surrogacy for foreigners has already been raised on several occasions. Currently, Ukrainian law allows surrogacy for married heterosexual couples who have proven their infertility. However, it is not known whether a similar bill will be introduced soon and, if passed, when it will come into force.
It is worth noting that couples who start a Surrogacy procedure before the possible changes in legislation, will be able to complete their program and leave with their child without difficulty.
